What's New?

Only in Maine can we have a frost, then two days later we've got 90 degree weather!  We've pulled out the pools, ice cubes, sunscreen, and bug spray.  Just a reminder - dogs get sunburn too.  Their nose is sensitive to the sun, as well as their ears.  Short hair dogs can easily get a burn on their face, head, and back.  If your dog has long hair that actually parts down the back, their skin along the part can get burned as well.  We apply sunscreen to dogs here, and we recommend you do the same if your dog is outdoors in the sun for more than 20 minutes.

Just a reminder - never leave your dog alone in the car.  Since dogs do not have sweat glands, they can not cool themselves like humans can.

Thanks to Hayden Excavating cars no longer sink and disappear in our driveway!  I still think someones mini van is making it's way to China via our driveway.  But seriously, Brian Hayden, actually found a spring under our driveway and was able to direct it towards the new ditches he made.  Now I can actually drive down my own driveway without knocking a few teeth out!

We've gone wireless!  As many of you know, because of our location we are not able to access cable and have been on dial-up all this time.  Now that Verizon has bought the towers in Southern Maine, we are able to access the internet via wireless!  What does this mean besides saving me time?  It means MORE PICTURES! Now I can actually download pictures to our web blog from home!! Speaking of pictures:

Happy Birthday Pippin!  Here Pippin, a summer regular, is enjoying is third birthday.

A dog's sense of humor

Imagine the horror on John's face when he thought he was going to have to call a parent and explain,

"Well, it seems Brady was testing the old If I lick a metal pole in the middle of the winter will my tongue stick?, theory.  Thankfully it was wood, and his tongue didn't stick, but I did have to tell him he to stop licking frozen surfaces!"

Enjoy the rest of your week, and remember, you might not like all this snow and cold weather, but the dogs LOVE it!

Second Annual Canine Costume Contest

Thursday we had our Costume Contest.  We had the pleasure of having professional photographer Joanne Lee come again this year to photograph the dogs.  Not only did she get awesome pictures of the dogs in costume, she also got terrific portraits of the dogs out of costume.  Please cast your vote for your favorite doggie costume:

http://www.joanneleephotoblog.typepad.com/

Be sure to scroll down and check out the video and regal portraits of the dogs.

Joanne is an exceptional photographer.  Elisabeth had her Senior Photos done with Joanne, and I've also had my mother-daughter portraits done with her.  Hanging on my dining room wall are last years photos of Kokeano and Zander, and I can't wait to add 'Dorothy' newly adopted Vizsla to the collection.

Many thanks to Joanne for great work, and many laughs.

First Place

Congratulations Fetch 'n Fun Family!  You are the proud winners of the 'Strut Your Mutt' 2008 First Place Ribbon for Dogs with the best Style.

9.8.08 017

The dogs in the picture are: Casey, the Joakim dogs, Tyson, Brody, Onyx, Captain, Sydney and Quincy, and their families.

I'm sorry the image turned out so dark, but the AWS loved our dogs dressed in matching bandanas so much that our group was awared first place.

What a beautiful day it was.  Check out the photos to the left.  Thank you to everyone for their support of the AWS's Sadie fund.

Our own new rescue dog was a delight to watch as she 'strutted' along with all the others.  I can't mention her name here, as the rescue that we got her from has asked us to keep her wearabout off the internet.  She loved the beach, the water, and all the attention that she got.  It was a very rewarding experience for me personally to see how far she has come in just a short time.

Strut Your Mutt

Please join us Sunday, September 7th for the Animal Welfare Society's Strut Your Mutt.  After feedback from our customers, we have decided not to register as a team, but rather let everyone register on their own.  However, we would love for our FNF family to meet and walk together.  We will be giving each FNF dog a free bandana.

For more information, a registration form, and pledge forms please go to:

Spring - Mud Season

Mud Season is upon us!  As soon as all the snow melts in the play areas, a fresh, thick layer of untreated bark mulch will be put down.  This will help to keep the dogs cleaner.  We recommend that you keep an old towel or blanket in your car so that when you pick up your dog, your car seats can be free of muddy paw marks!

Thank you for your patience with the driveway.  John has been filling pot holes daily, and when a little bit more of the snow is melted, we will have it grated.

The guinea hens are venturing further from their hen house now that the snow is melting.  The reason we got guinea hens is because they are tick eaters.  Being is a wooded area, the tree line is thick with ticks.  We felt guinea hens were the best, non-toxic way to keep the area free of ticks.  In a single day they usually circle a one acre area around the house and doggie play pens.  You will see them more often in the driveway so we ask that you make sure your dog is on a leash.  Guinea hens are a tasty treat for our canine friends.

A Celebrity Among Us

018 Petty_officer_bosuns_mate_spike Many of you know Spike.  His parents have just opened another Spike's unit for the Navy,  a famous hotdog restaurant.  As you may know Spike is the "Spokesdog" for the company, and a frequent visitor to Fetch 'n Fun.  We thought you would like to see the new Bosun's Mate in uniform and doing the honors for the "ribbon cutting" ceremony with the base commander. Thank you Dave for sharing these photos.
